43 North Iowa

How a local nonprofit stumbled upon
something amazing

How did it start?

Executive Director John Derryberry began his tenure at 43 North Iowa with one caveat: an annual Block Party for North Iowa that focuses on strengthening community and building partnerships.

From there, it grew…

As 43 North Iowa established itself as a merged nonprofit in 2019, the community and partnerships began to flourish. 43 North Iowa began partnering with other agencies to meet the community’s growing needs.

….and it didn’t stop there.

As 43 North Iowa expanded services, they also began to take on more challenging cases–and employed an agency-wide no- eject, no-reject system that transformed community social work.

The gatekeeping that traditionally occurs in social work was thrown out the window, and innovation was embraced–at 43 North Iowa, the best idea wins.

A Social Work Water Treatment Plant?

Hear us out.

43 North Iowa, in conjunction with its partners, functions as a coordinated system rather than a set of siloed programs.

No single filter does all the work; water may move forward, sideways, or loop back.

Referrals enter through many sources, flow into 43 North Iowa, move through multiple program “filters” and exit as safer, healthier, more independent community members.
